VermiBag Totes 1.6 SF or 3.0 SF

$44.95

Two Sizes are available.

VermiBag Tote 1.6

(Fits any Tote around 16″W x 21.6″L)  Height doesn’t matter

The VermiBag Tote 1.6 is designed to fit perfectly into the HDX 12 Gallon tote or the 12 Gallon tote they sell at Walmart (Hyper Tough 12 Gallon Snap Lid Stackable Plastic Storage Bin) . It has a surface area of 1.6 sf and will support a little over 1-2 lbs of worm.  Some customers have stated that Home Depot may not carry these 12 totes much longer so I will keep an eye on that. I currently see them available in other location.  The HDX 14 Gallon Tote is readily available at Home Depot

VermiBag Tote 3.0

(Fits any Tote around 19.6″W x 28.5″L )  Height doesn’t matter

The VermiBag Tote 3.0 is designed to fit perfectly into the HDX 14 Gallon tote (Home Depot carries these)  The surface area is about 3 sf and will support about 2-3+ lbs of worms.  This system works very well for as a breeder system or regular VermiComposting System.  The Bag can get heavy when full so if lifting is an issue…the 1.6 may be a better choice.

These system will fit into other containers that are of similar width and length.  Height does not matter.  That being said…I don’t guarantee how well they will fit.

Description

The VermiBag Totes provide a system that is suspended in a hard tub and does not have direct contact the bottom of the tub (much like a hammock).  Any excess moisture will pass thru the VermiBag Tote and collect in the bottom of the tub and can be drained away as needed. The tote provides a perfect compact system for folks that don’t have much space or don’t need much composting power. Since these system have excellent airflow, they will lose moisture faster than a traditional mortar tray tub. Additional moisture may be required when you feed the system. It is very easy to simply slide your hand down along the inside of the bag to access the moisture level at the bottom of the system. With the suspended design you don’t have to disturb the worms in order to reach the bottom of the system, as the material will pull away from the compost and you can easily place your hand down to determine the moisture level of the system.

The bag is made from Military spec nylon and is super strong.  The material is uncoated so it is very breathable and permeable so it will allow moisture to pass thru it.

The VermiBag Tote eliminates two of the most common sources of Failure with new Vermicomposting systems.

  • Excessive wet conditions
    • The VermiBag Tote is made with a very permeable material and any excess moisture will simply drain into the bottom of the tub. Since the bag is suspended off the bottom of the tub, it will never get excessively wet. Never say “Never” but it would be extremely unlikely for the system to go anaerobic. I would recommend turning the complete system from time to time to keep the bottom of the system from getting too compact. This also increase the airflow throughout the entire system and will benefit the worms.
  • Lack of Oxygen and creation of Anaerobic conditions in the bag
    • The VermiBag Tote is highly breathable and will breath over the entire surface area of the bag. Worms need oxygen to live and the tote provides plenty to let your worms thrive.

Optional Items for Drainage and Ventilation

Moisture Retention cover:

I offer moisture retention covers for both the 1.6 and 3.0 VermiBag Totes.  These are made of 1000d Cordura fabric and are waterproof but also breathable so they will prevent moisture from escaping from the top of your system but also breath to allow oxygen for the worms. Replace your bubble wrap with a permanent waterproof/breathable VermiCover.

Drainage/ventilation plugs.

You can just leave the drain hole open or I offer a simple 3/4″ plug that will work for both the drain hole and the Ventilation holes to prevent accidental spills when you move the system.  Duct tape will also work well to cover the ventilation holes…just remove the tape when you need additional ventilation.and it’s free.

If you don’t have a 3/4″ spade bit, there is an option to order one at checkout.

Simple plug that just pushes in.

This plug is a very neat and simple method to use for your drain hole and also for the ventilation in the lower section of the system.

I recommend drilling 4 ventilation holes in the system, about 4″ up from the bottom and then leaving 1 or 2 open for normal ventilation.  Then as you approach harvest time, you can open the additional vents to allow more ventilation and help reduce the moisture in the system. You could install as many ventilation holes as you want…4 seems to work well for me.  **One Vent hole must always be open**

The amount of ventilation needed for your system will depend on the environment the tote is placed.  If you have A/C or Heating in the area then it will tend to dry out the system quicker, so you may only need a couple ventilation holes…….if you are in a Humid area you may need more.

**Note**  The drain plug will prevent spillage from the system when you move it around, but…If you let the system fill up with a ton of liquid…it may start dripping out as it is probably not 100% leak proof, but you should never have that much liquid in the bottom of the system.
